Experimental cartography - from Austrian archives, combined with contemporary open source height data. High quality art prints on fine art paper.
In this project, historical maps are reinterpreted and developed into unique and fantastic landscapes - true to detail and geographically accurate. The works in EDITION 01 & 02 are strictly limited (special license from the Federal Office of Land Surveying for the reproduction of historical originals) and include 10 numbered and signed prints per map.
Old maps are a treasure trove of geographical and artistic qualities. The fascination that these old maps exude in various collections is to be conveyed and shared in EDITION 01 & 02 in the form of so-called shaded relief maps.
Here is a brief description of the editing process that these images go through:
-
Color editing of the original maps
-
The current elevation data (open source data from data.gv.at) is prepared and adapted to the section of the original maps
-
The two bases are brought together in the 3D program Blender3D (open source software) - here light and color shifts are simulated
-
The new images are rendered and prepared for printing Finally, these two-dimensional images are printed as digital prints in archive quality on fine art paper
The basis for the new landscapes are the following maps from the BEV (Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying), as well as open source elevation data from data.gv.at:
Edition 01
Provisional edition of the Austrian map 1:50 000 (1945-1970)
After only 18 sheets of the Austrian map 1:50 000 were published between 1924 and 1938, the missing sheets were published from 1945 onwards by enlarging the special map 1:75,000 to 1:50,000 with a green forest print. (Source: bev.gv.at)
Edition 02
Special map 1:75,000 (1872-1944)
The trapezoidal sheets with a sheet section of 30' geographical longitude (counted by Ferro) and 15' geographical latitude were published from 1872. In addition to the 752 sheets of the monarchy, there are other foreign sheets. From 1912, some sheets were published as multi-colour prints. (Source: bev.gv.at)
Digital terrain model (DTM) Austria
Data from the Austrian states. The basis is elevation data from airborne laser scan flights. Elevation information of the terrain in a grid of 10m x 10m. Projection EPSG:3128 (Source: data.gv.at)
Fun fact: According to the head of the BEV archive, this is the first artistic engagement with the collection of historical maps there.
